What's a blog?
Can you believe that's what my students said when I told them about this endeavor? I thought I was the only one who was new to blogging. So I told them a blog is an online journal of sorts. Being the mature sixth graders that they are, they said something like "Who would want to read your journal Mrs. Thompson?". Ha! I'll have to inform them that (eventually) I'll have quite the following here! Thanks classmates! :)

ReplyDeleteHi April
ReplyDeleteI had the same reaction from my students as well. I tried to start one in the fall and did an informal poll with my students and virtually none of them (out of 75) knew what a blog was. They understood MySpace and Facebook, but not just blogs. I guess even as technical as we think our students are, they still have a lot to learn. By the way, I had to put my blog on hold because I received an ugly post from an "annonymous" student. But, I'm ready to try it again...and I think they are too!

PS: I deleted my first post. I didn't proof read it enough.
That kind of thing gives blogging and the other social networking sites a bad name. When the kids ask about whether or not I have Facebook and My Space, I lie and say no for that very reason. Unfortunately students feel more comfortable I guess to be rude online than face to face. Still, not bold enough to post in their own name. In any case, I'm sure that there are even more students who would want to be your online friend than snarky!
